Good Luck Chinese Envelopes and Stationary
Red Chinese envelopes have a long history of providing recipients with good luck for the coming year. During the Qin Dynasty, early Chinese culture and traditions started the giving of what are now red envelopes. The elderly sewed yāsuì qián, money, with red thread and gave the coins as gifts and good luck, which warded off evil spirits and brought good health and a long life. The coins were replaced with red Chinese envelopes, usually filled with money.
